Science, Spirituality, and Religion

All religions, arts, and sciences are branches of the same tree.

Science
In the East, meditation, which includes mindfulness, has been curated and scientifically studied for thousands of years. This is why some refer to these practices as 'the science of the mind'. Though the 'mind' scientists do not wear white lab coats, their approach follows the scientific model of hypothesis, experimentation and conclusion based on countless individuals' experiences.

The Western scientific study of Meditation is only about 100 years old. The Western scientific study of Mindfulness is less than half that. The intensive scientific study of both is a very young field, indeed. However, the research is blossoming and adding to the rich field of understanding the profound nature of meditation for the entire world to appreciate.

We at YWM will strive to communicate information about the science of meditation and mindfulness responsibly, without hype and acknowledging what we do not yet know.

Meditation and mindfulness practices can help to make you a better scientist of self. You are in essence, a 'mind scientist' of your own mind. One of the central concepts of Mindfulness is “non-judging”, which refers to the avoidance of jumping to a conclusion, keeping your awareness open to new possibilities, perceptions, and understanding. Mindfulness practice can help prepare you to continue to observe with an open mind, a necessary part of the scientific process.

Spirituality

is a very popular word today and means many different things to different people. Most definitions include the concept of paying attention to the meaning of life, the meaning and purpose of one's own life, and one's relationship and interconnection to everyone and everything else. Meditation and Mindfulness practices are useful in approaching and exploring spiritual matters.

Religion is the system that groups of people use to address the questions of spirituality. Renee and Steve come from different religious perspectives. We continue to learn from actively and honestly communicating with one another, in kindness and with respect. The focus of our conversations is an open exchange of understanding rather than debate and competition. In the meditation guidance that we offer through YWM, our religious beliefs and practices come through; more directly at times, and less directly at others.

We welcome our visitors and members to choose guidance that seems pertinent and helpful to them. We are building a community here at YWM. Community is built upon communication. We strive to keep this a community that is welcoming, healing, and kind. We welcome and encourage our members to use the forums, on-line conferences and live meetings to share what is meaningful to them and what they have found to be helpful. We ask each participant to do so in loving kindness and with an interest in learning as well as sharing; working to listen and receive at least as readily as they are working to tell.  When there is disagreement of ideas there is an opportunity for learning and growing, as long as the sharing is done with large doses of love, patience, kindness and readiness to listen.
